WHO ARE WE?
The Monroe County Hooked Rug Guild recently celebrated its 50th anniversary (see below). In those years, guild members have been creating rugs, as well as wall hangings, pillows and ornaments, in every style and method of the art of rug hooking - from fine shading of Pearl McGown designs, to geometric, pictorials, tapestries and today's very popular wide-cut primitives.  Today's members, ranging in age and experience - from young to "seasoned" and from beginners to masters - are creating some exceptional one-of-a-kind works of art.  Check out some of them here on our website.

WHAT ARE WE ABOUT?
Traditional Rug Hooking has been defined as using a hand hook, similar to a crochet hook, to pull fabric strips or yarn through a burlap, linen or other even-weave backing to create rugs that are beautiful and functional.  Hooked rugs, while they retain their useful household purpose, have gone well beyond that to become a means of artistic expression in rugs and wall hangings that are genuine works of art.  Rug hooking has also been identified as North America's one indigenous folk art, growing in popularity throughout the 19th century into the 21st.

It is our mission and purpose to enhance an appreciation of this unique craft that now is perceived as a true art form. We are an inclusive group, welcoming new learners and accepting of all design styles and techniques.  To this end we provide a mentoring program for each other and for those new to hooking.  We have a large library of pattern resources and we share monthly programs on rug hooking topics of interest - color planning, numerous dying methods, historical background presentations as well as the newest trends and techniques.
